It's hard to believe that the foundations for Mammut were set way back in 1862 by Kasper Tanner, due to the popularity of agricultural rope work. But it wasn't until the 1950's that Mammut developed a sports range featuring the first synthetic rope used for mountaineering.
Today Mammut develops and manufactures outdoor clothing, accessories and equipment for climbing, mountaineering, snowboarding and skiing.
Their clothing range consists of some of the best fabrics and technology to date. This year saw their new 'c_change' fabric in the Chalten Jacket, which has raised the bar for membrane technology. Intelligent c_change reacts precisely to the changing temperatures. Think of pine cones! The membrane opens up when water and heat are present and then it will close when there is less heat and water, guaranteeing the ideal body climate for all activities.
Mammut have also produced unrivalled technology when it comes to their avalanche safety equipment. The Pulse Barryvox was a breakthrough in the industry and it was given the IPSO Outdoor Award and the Volvo Design Award. Released in 2006, the Pulse Barryvox is still the easiest avalanche transceiver to use and the technology allows you to quickly locate buried people with its graphical display. Always advancing their product range, in 2010 Mammut introduced the new Alugator Super Light avalanche rescue shovel. Weighing in at a lightweight 530g, this is a must have piece for mountaineering equipment for alpine and backcountry enthusiasts.
Having established themselves in the climbing, mountaineering, snowboard and skiing arenas, Mammut took their range further in 2003 with the takeover of Raichle Footwear. The Raichle takeover resulted in Mammut having 100 years of boot making experience behind them. Mammut have invested in, revised and developed their footwear range heavily since they bought Raichle, resulting in the world's lightest hiking and mountaineering boot design. They have also worked hard to produce outstanding sole technology.
